“Contend earnestly for The Faith…once for all delivered to the saints…” v3

 1 THE CRISIS “Certain men have crept in….” v4

[i] What they are Ungodly people v4

Not having the Spirit v19; Romans 8:9

Not concerned for truth. John 14:6; 1 John 1:8-10

They are…. v12-13

[a] Blemishes at your love feasts. Even the Jewish writings about Michael and

Enoch reflect the scriptures’ warnings v 9, 14

[b] Unfaithful shepherds Feeding themselves; motivated by lust not love.

[c] Waterless clouds Deceitful. Not what they seem to be.

[d] Fruitless trees Twice dead; plucked up by the roots.

[e] Wild waves of the sea Froth and bubble; no substance.

[f] Stars out of orbit Wandering aimlessly; Disordered.

[ii] What they do

[a] Turn the grace of God into evil v4; defile the body v8; act lustfully v16

[b] Deny our only master and Lord Jesus Christ v4

Ignore authority v8

Irrational like animals v10; living on appetite; murmur; complain.

Flatter to gain advantage v16; No sense of equity or justice.

Cause separation v19

[i] The Examples of History Evil activities of earlier days.

Physical beings v5. The Exodus marked by murmuring and destruction.

“Do not Harden your hearts…” Psalm 95

Spiritual beings v6 Angels fallen through disobedience.

Sodom and Gomorrah v7 Trade names for evil

[ii] The Authority of Scripture Apostolic words of earlier days v17

Prepared by the Holy Spirit 2 Timothy 3:15-17

Spoken by men commissioned by God 2 Peter 1:21

 3 THE COMMAND “Contend earnestly….” v3 [Only NT use]

[i] For The Faith [Truth]

“delivered”, not invented by people.

“once for all”, not changing with human desires.

“unto the saints [believers]….” All of them!

The whole fellowship of believers must guard the truth.

[ii] Contend earnestly by

[a] Obeying the Truth v20  SHOW IT!

Build up yourselves in your most holy faith [truth].

Praying in the Holy Spirit. Ever sensitive to His promptings.

Keeping yourselves in the love of God v21

Looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ…. Eternal life.

[b] Publishing the Truth in this generation  KNOW IT!

Seek others for Christ… “having mercy / saving from fire…” v22-23

[c] Preserving the Truth for other generations.

 4 THE COURAGE “He is able…” v24-25

“God our Saviour - is able to keep you from stumbling.

- is able to present you faultless before his glorious presence….” v24

“To him be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord for evermore!” v 25
