God’s Perfect Plan

Passage: Jeremiah 29:1-19
Service Type:

Rev Tom Halls Sydney Australia
Jeremiah 29:1-19
God controls all things and reveals his purpose for the world.
He did not forget Israel. Jesus, the Christ was coming.
29:1 “The letter that the prophet Jeremiah sent to exiles…”
The prophecy is for God’s chosen people.
v4 “The Lord Almighty, to all those I carried into exile…”
I have made you dependent on the environment
v5 “Build …plant … eat …..” With me, you have a future.
v6 “Marry …. Increase in number there; do not decrease.”
Do not to perish in despair, or descend into pagan lust.
Live with the dignity you have as chosen people.
However you feel, God is in control of your life.
v7 “seek the peace and prosperity …. Pray to the Lord for it…”
Believers resist efforts to destroy what is natural and normal.
Unchanging principles…
# “He made us for himself” Psalm 4:3
# “He made us male and female” Genesis 1:27; 5:2
Difficulties should not be allowed to dictate ‘normality’.
For followers of Jesus, ‘normal’ means, what God commands.
Reactionaries branded Jeremiah a madman [v20-28]
Every truth has its counterfeit: for example, ‘Fake news’

V8-9 “Do not let the prophets and diviners among you deceive you.”
Willingness to hear makes falsehood, gossip and slander flourish.
There is blasphemy at work in false prophecy.
God expects his people to actively seek his Word.
V32 Atheism, agnosticism, or whatever is currently popular,
invites disaster from the God who made us,
I have plans for you
v10 “I will come to you…fulfil my promise…bring you back to this place.

v11 For I know the plans I have for you…plans to prosper you
and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
v12 “Call on me …. Pray to me, I will listen to you.”
James comments to the C1st church James 4:4-5
To his exiled people in Jeremiah’s day the Lord says…
v 13 You will seek me and find when you seek me with all your heart.
v14 I will be found by you,… I will bring you back”
Sincerity in prayer is the foundation for godly living.
God knows your need … feels your pain… has a perfect plan.
The exiles had to learn from what they experienced [15-17]
V19 “They have not listened to my words,” ……
And you exiles have not listened either,”
v 20 “Therefore, hear the word of the Lord, all you exiles
whom I have sent away from Jerusalem to Babylon.”
Their exile is the Lord’s doing. Their hope rests on him, also.
God’s eternal plan is unfolding for their benefit.
It is not limited to a lifetime / generation / a people.
In chapter 31 Jeremiah speaks of a New Covenant
that God will make with his redeemed people.
[31:33] “I will put my law in their minds…write it on their hearts.
I will be their God, and they will be my people.
God always planned beyond sacrifices and laws. [Hebrews 8:8-12]
The single sacrifice of God’s own Son “once and for all” [10:14]
“has made perfect forever those who are being made holy…”
It is a promise for Christians now, in these difficult last days,
when living for Jesus is scorned by the world.
v11 For I know the plans I have for you…plans to prosper you
and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Do you believe him?
